Patryk is one of our European Solidarity Corps (ESC) volunteers and here he shares her experience of living in Siena and working at Siena Art.
First steps in Siena by Patryk Misiak:
I finished my bachelor's degree back in Poland and wanted to start studying at film school. However, I felt like I could use a break before diving into a five-year master's program in film editing, and I also wanted to build up my portfolio before applying.
Then, a friend introduced me to the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), and out of nowhere, I found the perfect match for what I needed and wanted to do during my gap year. I thought it would be a great opportunity to practice my videography skills in a lovely Italian city, but after arriving here, I realized it would be so much more than that.
The city itself made a huge impression on me: beautifully preserved medieval architecture, stunning Tuscan views, and narrow streets winding across the hilly terrain. But what truly makes it special is not just the place, but the people-they are the heart of this entire experience.
Siena is peaceful, yet vibrant at the same time. You can find peace, but you can also immerse yourself in the excitement of local events happening constantly, especially during the contrada parades and street parties. I've met inspiring, kind, and open-minded people from the local art scene, as well as community members and international students. It’s an incredible way to experience a different culture, pick up a new language, and get to know Siena, which feels truly unique.
During my first few weeks, beyond honing my skills, working, and meeting new people, I noticed that in a way, I reconnected with my inner child. I started returning to things I loved doing as a kid, like drawing, thanks to classes at the institute.
Another way I explore Italian culture is through food. I try to cook a new recipe every day, which I find incredibly relaxing and rewarding-especially using fresh, local Tuscan produce. And while I genuinely love both the cooking process and tasting the final dish, nothing compares to the feeling of sharing a meal and seeing everyone tucking in with a smile. That is definitely my biggest motivation!
I’m looking forward to making the most of the next five months I have left on this project. I’m sure I won’t get bored-24 hours just don't seem like enough to do everything I want during the day. I’ll make sure to enjoy every moment of my remaining time in Siena, but I already know I’ll be back, as I've found places and people worth returning to. <3
