“Fields of Opportunity”, a CERV EU project about sustainable innovation in agriculture

The “Fields of Opportunity” CERV project is Benferri’s contribution to a broader question facing rural communities across Europe: how to carry forward what is worth keeping while making space for what the future demands?

Program: Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme (CERV)

Call: CERV-2024-TOWN-TT

Project title: “Fields of Opportunity – Benferri’s Agriculture 5.0 Model for European Sustainable
Innovation”

Benferri, a small municipality in Spain’s Vega Baja region, has built its identity on agriculture. For generations, farming has sustained local families and defined the character of the community. Yet this heritage now faces a convergence of pressures: an aging farming population, youth migration away from the sector, and the accelerating impacts of climate change. At the same time, the emergence of Agriculture 5.0, with its integration of advanced technologies and sustainable practices, opens a genuine window of opportunity.

The municipality of Benferri is therefore aiming at developing strategies to honor its traditional agricultural knowledge and lived experience as assets for local sustainable development; demonstrating the economic viability of contemporary agriculture is also key to attract a younger generation of potential farmers who would be able to lead the innovation of the sector.

In response to these needs, Benferri has committed to a process of structured, community-rooted renewal. The goal is to build an agricultural model that is at once more resilient, more productive, and more environmentally responsible while employing cutting-edge practices and inherited wisdom to reinforce each other.
