Nanette Carter (b. 1954, Columbus, Ohio) is an American abstract artist best known for her inventive collages and mixed-media works on paper and Mylar. Her practice, active since the mid-1970s, explores form, line, color, and texture to address the complexities of contemporary life, nature, and social experience. Carter studied art at Oberlin College and earned her MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where she later taught for two decades. Her work has been exhibited widely nationally and internationally and is included in major museum collections. Drawing on influences from jazz, abstraction, and cultural traditions, her series such as Cantilevered and Afro Sentinels reflect both formal balance and urgent cultural dialogues.
