Michael Hopfner

Fall 2013

Michael Höpfner is an Austrian contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in long-distance walking journeys across desert and steppe regions of Eastern Europe and Asia. Born in Krems an der Donau in 1972, Höpfner studied painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and fine art photography at the Glasgow School of Art. He lives and works in Vienna. Drawing on travels through Ukraine, Central Asia, the Himalayas, and East Asia, Höpfner reflects on vast landscapes, shifting nomadic cultures, and his own physical endurance through installations combining black-and-white photography, drawing, slide projections, and tent-based sculptural forms.
