Jānis Joņevs is a Latvian writer and translator, born in 1980. In 2004, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Theory of Culture from the Latvian Academy of Culture. Since then, he has pursued a career in literature, publishing several short stories as well as his debut novel Jelgava 94 in 2013. His translation work includes Agota Kristof’s The Notebook (from French) and Bernard-Marie Koltès’ In the Solitude of Cotton Fields (from French). In 2014, Joņevs received the Latvian Literature Prize for Best Debut, was recognized by the Latvian television cultural program 100g of Culture with its annual Kilogram of Culture award, and was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature. Jānis Joņevs’s residency is organized in partnership with the Latvian arts organization PAREIZĀ ĶĪMIJA (kimija.lv), which manages a series of residencies for Latvian and Italian writers and translators on behalf of the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
